DEET is the most widely used insect repellent active ingredient in the world, and it has been for decades. If you have ever picked up a bottle of bug spray, there is a good chance DEET was the working ingredient inside. It is also one of the most studied repellents on the market, which is exactly why the questions around it deserve a clear, honest answer rather than a scary one.
This guide explains what DEET is, what it does, and what the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) actually say about its safety. We will also talk plainly about why some people still choose a plant-based alternative, not out of fear, but out of preference.
The quick answer
DEET is a synthetic chemical called N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide. It works by making it hard for mosquitoes and ticks to locate you, so they are less likely to land and bite. DEET is not the only effective option. The CDC also recognizes picaridin, IR3535, and oil of lemon eucalyptus (the plant source of PMD) as effective repellents. So if DEET is not your preference, you are not trading away protection by choosing a different registered active. You are simply choosing a different tool that fits how you like to use it.

The goal at the time was to protect soldiers from insect-borne disease in areas where mosquitoes and ticks were a serious health threat.
That long history matters, because it means DEET has been in widespread use and under scientific review for more than half a century. Few consumer ingredients have been studied as thoroughly.
How does DEET work?
For a long time, people assumed repellents "killed" bugs or created a chemical shield. That is not what happens. Repellents like DEET do not kill mosquitoes. They interfere with the insect's ability to find you.
Mosquitoes and ticks locate a host using a mix of cues, including the carbon dioxide you exhale, body heat, and the scent compounds on your skin. DEET is thought to confuse and mask those signals. Research suggests mosquitoes simply find it harder to detect a person wearing DEET, and they are less inclined to land. Some studies also indicate mosquitoes dislike the smell of DEET directly. Either way, the practical result is the same: fewer landings and fewer bites.
This is worth understanding because it explains why repellent coverage and reapplication matter so much. A repellent only works on the skin it actually covers, and it works only while enough of the active remains on your skin. Missed spots and worn-off product are the usual reasons a repellent seems to "stop working."
Is DEET safe? What the EPA and CDC say
This is the question most people are really asking, so let us be direct and stick to the agencies whose job it is to answer it.
The EPA regulates repellents in the United States and has reviewed DEET extensively. According to the EPA, DEET does not present a health concern to the general population, including children, when it is used as directed on the product label. The CDC recommends DEET-based repellents as a safe and effective way to prevent mosquito and tick bites, which is a meaningful benefit given the diseases those bites can transmit.
Both agencies frame their guidance around one key phrase: as directed. Repellent safety is closely tied to following the label. That includes applying only to exposed skin and clothing, not overapplying, not spraying under clothing, and washing it off once you are back indoors.
It is fair and accurate to say that DEET is a well-studied active with a long track record, and that the agencies responsible for evaluating it consider it safe and effective when used correctly. That is the current, evidence-based position, and it is the honest starting point for any conversation about repellents.
What concentration of DEET do you need?
A common myth is that a higher DEET percentage means better protection. It does not. The concentration mainly affects how long the protection lasts, not how strong it is.
Lower concentrations protect for a shorter time, while higher concentrations last longer before you need to reapply. Beyond a certain point, higher percentages offer diminishing returns on duration. Guidance from health authorities generally points toward choosing a concentration that matches how long you will be outdoors rather than reaching for the strongest bottle on the shelf. For a short evening walk, a lower concentration may be plenty. For a long day on the trail, a longer-lasting option makes more sense.
Always check the specific product label for its stated protection time and reapplication instructions, since these vary by formula.
DEET and children
Parents understandably want extra clarity here. General CDC guidance indicates that DEET-based repellents can be used on children, and the EPA has not set a required minimum age for DEET on its own. However, standard public health advice recommends against using oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD-based products on children under 3 years old. Different actives carry different age guidance, so this is one area where reading the specific product label is essential.
For any repellent and any age, the usual precautions apply: apply it to your own hands first and then onto a child rather than spraying directly onto their face, keep it away from eyes and mouth, and avoid their hands, since young children put their hands in their mouths.
DEET side effects and common concerns
DEET is considered safe when used as directed, and serious reactions are rare. Still, people have real, practical reasons they sometimes look for an alternative. It is worth walking through these honestly rather than dismissing them.
Feel and finish. Many DEET formulas have an oily or greasy feel on the skin. This is a texture preference, not a safety issue, but it is one of the most common reasons people say they dislike using it.
Smell. DEET has a distinctive chemical odor that some people find unpleasant. Again, this is about preference and experience, not safety.
Plastics and gear. DEET can damage certain synthetic materials, including some plastics, spandex, and other synthetic fabrics, as well as painted or varnished surfaces. This is a well-known handling note. If you have ever seen a watch strap or sunglasses frame get tacky after contact with bug spray, DEET may have been the reason. It does not harm natural fibers like cotton.
Skin irritation. Rarely, some people experience skin irritation from DEET. The EPA advises washing treated skin after coming indoors and discontinuing use if you have a reaction. As with any topical product, patch testing first is sensible if you have sensitive skin.
None of these points contradict the safety guidance. A product can be considered safe and effective by regulators and still not be someone's first choice because of feel, smell, or how it interacts with their gear. That is a preference, and it is a legitimate one.
Why some people choose a plant-based repellent instead
Here is where we will be transparent about who we are. The Superbloc makes a plant-based repellent, and we chose that route on purpose. But we want to be clear about the reasoning, because we do not think the case for a plant-based option needs any exaggeration to stand on its own.
The strongest reason is preference. People who want effective bite protection without the oily feel or the strong odor of a traditional DEET spray often prefer a plant-derived active. That is a completely reasonable basis for a choice, and it does not require anyone to believe DEET is dangerous.
The important part, and the part we will not compromise on, is that choosing plant-based should not mean choosing less protection. That is why the active matters. Not every "natural" repellent is backed by strong evidence, and some plant oils offer only brief, inconsistent protection. The exception is oil of lemon eucalyptus and its refined component PMD, which the CDC recognizes alongside DEET and picaridin as an effective repellent active.

How to choose between DEET and a plant-based repellent
There is no single right answer here, and we are not going to pretend there is. Both DEET and PMD are effective, CDC-recognized actives. The better question is which one fits you.
Choose based on how it feels and how you will use it. If you do not mind the feel and smell of DEET and want a long-studied classic, a DEET product used as directed is a sound choice. If you want a CDC-recognized active without the oily finish or the strong odor, a well-formulated PMD repellent gives you that without giving up protection.
Whatever you pick, the fundamentals are the same. Cover exposed skin fully, reapply according to the label, and pair repellent with other simple habits like long sleeves at dusk and checking for ticks after time in tall grass. The active is only as good as how you use it.
